Farmington is home to two superb hiking sites, one lies on the developed trails along Animas River and the other lies on the lesser explored paths on the Bisti Badlands and De-Na Zin Wilderness. The latter is characterized by some breathtaking geological formations that have resulted over last 70 million years due to a once-existing river flow and volcanic sediments. When the water disappeared from the place, it left behind a layer of jumbled sandstones and mudstones to slowly evolve into what is now a famous tourist magnet.
