Founded in a place known as "Under the Linden tree" during the 13th century it was initially one of the largest monasteries of the Alsace region. Later during 19th century, the monastery was converted into a museum. Today, the museum owns a rich collection of paintings and sculptures ranging from the late Middle Ages to the early Renaissance period. It is home to the Issenheim altarpiece painted by Grunewald (master of late Gothic art). A place within the museum has been especially dedicated to the original models of some of his masterpieces such as the Lion of Belfort, and the Statue of Liberty in New York.
