Explore Hyderabad

Hyderabad is the capital of the southern Indian state of Telangana and de jure capital of Andhra Pradesh. It is also known as Cyberabad because it is a focal point of India’s IT industry. Established in 1591, the city’s skyline is dotted with a scintillating lineup of 16th century Persian architectural highlights like - Charminar, Golconda Fort, and the Qutb Shahi tombs. Hyderabad is also called the Biryani City because it is famous for its remarkable mix of Persian and Mughal culinary arts, especially Biryani.

Things to do in Hyderabad

Charminar (literally ‘four minarets’) is the icon of Hyderabad. This grand structure was built to signify the place where the city’s founder, emperor Quli Qutb Shah had prayed to the God to end a rampant epidemic in his kingdom. Each of Charminar’s four towers rises to a height of 48.7 and comprises 140 steps. This iconic monument is also a fusion of Hindu and Muslim brotherhood because it contains a mosque in the upper storey and a temple at the ground floor of a minaret.

Mecca Masjid

Mecca Masjid is one of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad. It was built by Qutb Shahi dynasty (1518-1687) and subsequently by Mughal Empire between 1617 and 1694. An ornate work of Islamic architecture, this grand mosque’s central arch is thought to be built using bricks and soil brought from the holy Mecca. The Mecca Masjid is also believed to contain a hair of Prophet Mohammad in one of its rooms.

Golconda Fort

The Golkonda Fort is a medieval citadel and fort situated 11 kilometers away from the city of Hyderabad. It was the seat of power of Qutb Shahi dynasty and is famous for its mines that have yielded the world’s most famous diamond, Koh-i-Noor and several other precious stones. The Golconda Fort is also a delightful work of acoustic engineering as its historical entrance Fateh Darwaza (or Victory Gate) makes even a clapping sound reverberate to the highest point almost a kilometer away. This acoustic used to serve as a warning in case the royal family inside it was under any attack.
